Lisa Milroy ::::::
In February 2026 we welcomed Lisa Milroy to the studios.
Lisa worked with the researchers Tracy Hill and Kathryn Poole to create a series of ambitious test prints exploring colour viscosity and paper surfaces.
Lisa lives and works in London and Kent. Painting and colour are at the heart of her practice, familiar objects, landscape, architecture, people, textiles and pattern are familiar motifs and subjects. Throughout her practice, Lisa has been fascinated by the relation between stillness and movement, and the nature of making and looking at painting.
During her residency Lisa created ambitious new series works on paper. With a focus on the viscosity of ink and painted mark, Lisa pushed the boundaries of what was possible using etching ink and a range of water colour papers. As a painter, she challenged the normal boundaries of etching inks, relaxing and releasing the oils allowing them to be absorbed by the weight of the paper without bleeding. Playing with colour, negative and positive space and form, she created new monotypes, etchings and a stone lithograph.
The monotype series captured the energy of the painters hand but offered a density and saturation often associated with intaglio when the ink is pushed deeply into the surface of the paper.
The copper plate etchings found a gentler mark, allowing the printed line and dissolving etching ink to balance form and light.
